Generation Dead

July 10, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Just finished reading a pretty darn good teen book called Generation Dead by Daniel Waters. It’s not AMAZING but it’s such a fab concept: basically, teenagers are starting to come back from the dead. Not in a disgusting zombie way (so no brain eating; no crumbling skin) but in a kinda cold, pale way. It’s sold as being a kinda love story between a ‘breathing’ girl and a ‘dead’ boy but it’s not really about that.

It starts well, and has some funny characters. But it struggles a bit at the end. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t still recommend it though.

Anyway, it’s got me thinking more about writing for the teen market. There’s an idea formulating in my mind. And two very special characters. I think that idea would suit the teen market most, specifically angsty teenage girls …

Will tell you more about it when it becomes a bit clearer in my mind. Am also trying to focus on my script at the mo (one project at a time, right?) which I’ve actually written but I just need to finish the end and edit it. I don’t feel any urgent hurry with the script, would like to finish it for autumn, for sure.

Anyway my poppets, catch up laters. Sorry if this post is a bit crap and grammatically challenged! x

The art of script-writing …

May 1, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Just a real quick post today, am so so busy at work and even busier with my script (plus there’s all the reading I’m doing, all the thinking I’m doing about novels etc).

Script-writing is rather easy. Well, when I say ‘easy’ I mean it flows really well. I spent all weekend writing and writing. The idea’s coming together. It’s looking good. I’m so excited.

Exciting new project, OMG

April 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I have something to tell you all. I hope you’re sitting down.

I have another blog. An anonymous one. I visit it at night, when no-one’s looking, and type away frantically. That’s why I haven’t been on here much. It’s about something going on in my life that I don’t care to share with all and sundry. Don’t worry, nothing sordid. Just the life cycle and all that nonsense and some of you know what I mean.

And before you ask for the URL, it’s ANONYMOUS!

Anyway, a script editor from ITV got in touch, loves the blog and has suggested I have a go at writing a script around the subject matter. I’m not suggesting she’s agreed she commission me. She doesn’t wield that kinda power. But she said she’ll help me – and that she has some good contacts.

I’m beyond excited but also daunted. I’ve never ever written a script before. Never entertained the idea. And writing fiction is still my first love; getting a novel published still my ultimate dream. So it’s all a tad surreal.

But the fact someone has approached me cos they love my writing – someone who has a senior script editing job at ITV – gives me a nice warm glow.

So I’m gonna start working on my script while also keeping in mind my novel-writing. I’ve decided to do more reading in the teen market and have a little think over the summer about the kind of thing I want to write. I still love my apocalyptic chick lit idea and have lots of ideas for it but I just-can’t-write-it! Which is utterly ridiculous cos surely that’s the whole point?

Anyway, will keep ya’ll posted. The script editor has suggested I write two episodes then a synopsis and approach some people at BBC (ha ha, her competition but the idea I have is more suited to BBC).

Sorry to be so cloak and dagger. You’ll understand one day …
